Winter Doldrums

It’s April 1st, and besides a week or so of nice weather a while ago it hasn’t turned into spring yet. I’m feeling and fighting the winter blues pretty hard. We’ve all been sick, stuck inside, watching too much tv.

I fight it by planning house projects and planting starts inside. Oh and hatching chicks! I’m 10 days out from ducklings. I have 13 duck eggs growing little babies, and I’m so excited to see what we get. Even if we won’t keep any… many? My daughter has her heart set on keeping a few, so we’ll see.

As for house projects, I bought a possum belly bakers table that we are going to clean up and fix up a bit. It’s a beauty. I had hoped it was going to be the new island but it’s a bit small for that. It’s so cute though. It’ll be a perfect landing place for all my bowls of bread dough.

We also bought a soda blasting machine, which is like a sand blaster but blasts baking soda which is a bit less harsh so you can use it on wood. We are going to use it to strip doors of 100 layers of paint. Or that’s the plan/goal and we’ll see how it works.

Plans to start some work in the living room and kitchen have been talked about for 10 years now, so it’s going to be fun to start taking walls out and actually seeing what we will have to work with.

I am on goat watch as they are due to start kidding any day now. Unfortunately we leave the buck in all the time to narrowing down an actual date is harder…. But 5 months ago the action started. We just watch for any signs and it does appear that 2/4 of them are getting close.

Plants in the basement are doing well! This is year 2 or 3? Of doing this. Tomato’s, peppers, marigolds, kale, calendula, eggplant, rosemary, parsley… probably some things I wouldn’t have to start inside but I can’t help myself. I don’t know what I’m doing I just do it and learn. I bought paprika peppers that I’m very excited to grow.

That’s what’s going on here.. lots of things but it feels so slow. Stuck in an ever raining, windy winter.
