Soccer, Sleep, and Siblings

Yesterday my sister, brother, and a few “adopted” siblings were in town for a quick visit. It was so much fun!! I LOVE my family.

So I got off work at 7am, went home and Matt made me Snickerdoodle waffles and a mimosa! yummy! Then we decided it would be a good morning for a four wheeler ride up in the mountains. It was gorgeous!

After that we went into town to get chicken food, jeans, and boots.
From there we went to watch my cousin Helen play soccer! She did really well!

After the game we went to IceBurg for lunch!! We had gurshburgers, fries, and scotch and soda’s. A gurshburger is heaven between two slices of bread. It is a cross between a grilled cheese and a cheeseburger. mmmm, I think I want another one :] Iceburg

Then we went to Oma’s house to help Mom and Scott move more of their stuff into storage.. well, everyone else helped and I took a nap. It was a good few hours for me, everyone else filled and unfilled a U-Haul.

Then we came home, played games, joked, laughed, listened to good music, smoked cigars and drank a few beers and gin and tonics! Max made some delicious Chili dogs with peppers and onions. This morning the stove quit working so he made hash on the grill. It was so nice to have someone else cooking for a while!

Now I’ve been cleaning… and cleaning. Because 4 college aged boys make a big mess!! I wouldn’t trade them for the world though!! Love having them over! Can’t wait until next time!!

New Camera and the Owl

I got a new camera this last week and have been busy taking a lot of pictures. Let me just say that it has been the most awesome thing to have!!

The wildlife around here must be telling each other to come pose for me. I swear they know that they look beautiful. Matt says I should enter some pictures in the fair next year, do any look fair worthy to you?

I was shocked when I saw the owl just chilling on the fence post and delighted when he stood still long enough for me to get a few good pictures of him!!
Which picture is your favorite?

Eggs!!!

I went out with my hardworking (and reluctant) husband to clean the chicken coop yesterday evening! And found three, yea three, little eggs!!! All white!!

I may have screamed a little! It was so exciting!!

We out straw out in the coop and the chickens have been loving it today! I went and we had one more little white egg today!! So I’m assuming that they are all from one chicken!

They went it to make some of Uncle Sam’s famous chocolate chip cookies! yum! It was fun having him stop by today!

🙂 yay, fresh eggs!! I cannot wait until they start producing more 🙂

We ate and ate and ate all weekend, it’s amazing that my clothes still fit. I thought I would have to roll out of camp!

We had hash with sausage, bacon, and eggs, tri-tip steak and caramelized onions, German sausages, chips and dip, pear dump cake, cinnamon rolls, and I’m sure I forgot some 🙂

Oi, I love camping.

Swinging

I’m multi-tasking right now, taking advantage of my last few hours of internet for a few days and enjoying a break from life, swinging in the hammock.

But I’ve also been swinging in other ways lately. As I was sitting here I started to think back to the last week or two of life and realized that I’ve been swinging back and forth so fast between school, work, and housework, that I haven’t been able to jump off and stop the spinning in my head.

Remember when you were a kid and you would pump your legs as hard as you could? You would make the swing go as high as you could? As fast as you could? Then you would wait till you were at the top and jump off?

Well, that’s been life for me. Higher and higher, faster and faster, my head has been spinning with to-do lists, work days, school lists, school work, quizes, discussion boards, dinners, cleaning. But when I’ve tried to jump off I’ve been unable. Stuck in the fast paced-ness and doing-things-ness of life.

This weekend Hubs and I are going camping for four days! Four days of no internet, no tv, no jobs, no work, no(t much) school, and no distractions.

Days of getting to focus on our marriage, focus on each other, focus on God’s beauty, and making memories with some great friends!

The busy-ness is necessary for now in our day to day life. We need to work to eat, to buy Matt a pickup that will start in the cold, to fix up our house, to pay for my school. But it will be so nice to get away from it all for a few days.

So now I’m off, to pack clothes and food. But it’s been a good moment here in the hammock. Writing and watching the birds, mainly the male pheasant strutting around the yard 🙂

How do you jump off?

Back in School

I am on my break during the second day of school. I’m doing the WSU RN-BSN program… wow that’s a lot of letters. Washington State University Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing. It is a program that you can do in stages or in one year. My plan is to bust it out in one year so that I can be done or maybe (probably) continue on to my Masters and Nurse-Midwife Certification.

This program is a really good fit for me because as I work full time as a night shift OB/GYN nurse I can attend classes as I am able or watch archived/live classes as that fits in my schedule. What I hope this means for me, is a steady paycheck coming in and the ability to attend classes without sacrificing TONS of sleep hours.

My goal is to finish this year of school and with the help of really fantastic financial aid plus good paycheck coming in, be able to pay off my student loans and not have to take out any more. Wish me luck.

So for those of you who may start to wonder if I’ve died… nope. I’m either sleeping, working, doing school, or lost in the piles of laundry. (Ali will you please come clean my house again??)

It looks like it will be a lot of work, but not so much that I can’t handle it. Especially with so much support behind me.

Any way, this is my school update… I’ll post again on my kitchen updates soon! :]

Blackberry Season

One of my favorite times of the year is almost over and gone. The blackberries have been amazing this year! It was a very early start to the season and it’s going to be a very early end. My sister has been coming over on Sunday’s to help pick them. We pick until our hands are purple, they sting from the thorns, and our buckets are full. There’s something about the smell of picking blackberries that is so relaxing, it brings back memories of going up to the mountains with my mom, Oma, and Aunt in the summer to pick while wading in the creek.

While we pick we hear Howard (mom’s big black lab) snorting as he eats the blackberries off the lower branches. Silly dog will eat anything. The other dogs laze about in the shade.

After we pick it’s never hard to think up of something to do with all the berries. The options are endless, variations galore, and all of them taste delicious!

We’ve had: blackberry & peach cobbler, blackberry coffee cake, blackberries and angel food cake, blackberry margarita’s, blackberry pie, and blackberry jalapeño jam.

I have enough in the fridge from yesterday to make another batch of jam, so I think that’s what I’ll do today!

Do you have a favorite blackberry recipe??

Pretzels and Jalepeno Cheese Sauce

Last night my cousin Peter and I got an itch for a hot pretzel and then of course to go with it gooey cheesy sauce. YUM. Here’s what the results were: 048
They are so good!!
It has been fun to have Peter stay with us the past week (ish) He’s started working on the farm, only he broke down so I get to put him to work at home :] haha. I feed him well in return for all the help.

Cheesy Sauce Recipe:
3 cups grated cheese
2 TBS. cornstarch
1 cup milk
onion
jalapeño
2 cloves garlic
2 TBS. butter
4 oz. cream cheese

Melt the butter, sauté the onion, garlic, and jalapeño until soft. Add milk and cornstarch. Then add cream cheese and cheddar cheese, melt and serve. YUM!!

Pretzels:
5 cups flour
3 cups water
2 TBS yeast
1 tsp salt
2 TBS honey

Mix dough, let rise 15 minutes. Divide into 12 parts and shape into pretzels! Brush with and egg mixed with 1 TBS water, sprinkle with salt and bake at 450 for 15-20 minutes. Enjoy!!

Chicken Coop Remodel

A few Saturdays ago we expanded the chicken coop so that they could finally be outside!! Sunshine= happy chickens! And they are getting older and I don’t think they could squeeze between anything anymore!

My wonderful husband did so much work, and we got it done in a day! yay!

The chickens really didn’t like the chain saw being used to cut their hole to the outside world :] but it was the best we had! I decided not to show the picture I took of Matt with his shirt off, working on his tan. He has a bad a$$ farmers tan though :] haha.

Life moves forward. Things are still happening here on the farm.

Totes McGoats

Not sure how that phrase became popular, but it is and it’s now also the name of one of my three weed eaters :] Or at least that’s why my hubby said I could get them! Really I love them! They are so stinking cute!

Oreos, McGoats, and Ginger are the newest additions to our animal family. We will probably eat two of them eventually and the Ginger will get to reproduce and help us keep the population up.

So far, they have been in pasture one day and ruined it by getting out. Once we hot wire the fence we will try again. They like grain and come to it, so thankfully it made it easy to get them back into the corral.

Pictures!!

The cougar has yet to get one, which is nice! I’m really hoping they all survive up here.  Not sure what all is in them, but it should be mostly Boer. We want a Nubian to milk but so far we are still looking for that one.
